Assessing Cleanability After Fire Damage In Your Colorado Springs Kitchen

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Has an Arsenal of Cleaning Equipment and Supplies Post Smoke & Fire Damage for Restoration

A kitchen fire can start so easily from cooking oil in an unattended pan, or a faulty oven or other kitchen appliance can quickly become a blaze. After a fire in your kitchen, it is natural to be worried about all the contents of the room and whether or not they can be cleaned or saved. That is why we recommend you call SERVPRO as quickly as possible. Our trained experts assess cleanability and decide on the best course of action. Our aim is to restore and clean as much as we can, leaving your kitchen “Like it never even happened.”

Many factors affect cleanability after fire damage to your Colorado Springs kitchen:

The type of material burned. Natural materials such as wood are often easier to clean than synthetics such as plastic. Synthetic materials frequently produce a smeary residue that is challenging to clean--soot. That means that your wooden kitchen table or chairs can often be cleaned up and restored using a mix of mechanical actions (scrubbing and rubbing) and application of cleaning fluids.

Age of the surface burned. Older materials are harder to clean because the more aged a material is, the more porous it is, and the more soot can penetrate it. If the material is too delicate to withstand scrubbing or soaking, SERVPRO has cleaning foam and absorbent powders on hand to help remove soot.

How hot the fire was. The hotter the fire, the more difficult the cleanup. A blaze that burns at a higher temperature causes surfaces to become more porous which means particles can penetrate them more deeply.

How much moisture was present. If the blaze triggered a sprinkler system or there was heavy use of water hoses in battling the fire, then residues are more likely to be sealed to surfaces and be harder to remove. Water extraction from the affected area is a topic on its on merit.

SERVPRO has a range of cleaning techniques available to combat even tough soot stains. Simple scrubbing and wiping with cleaning agents is enough for some residues. However, for tougher residues, we have a range of tools. For example, we can use an upholstery cleaning machine, which is suitable for cleaning drapes or other soft furnishings and pushes powerful detergents into the material. The upholstery cleaning machine can also be used to apply cleaning solvents to materials that cannot withstand wet cleaning. The use of the Esporta Washing Systems effectively separates soil and smoke particles from soft fabrics even stuffed toy animals.

Smaller items can be placed in ultrasonic cleaning tanks, where the action of millions of bubbles forming and popping gives a thorough deep cleanse.
