Protect Yourself from a Enteroviruses

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

germs up close Germs are everywhere and can be hard to remove without the right equipment!

With the rising number of cases of enteroviruses in our area, it is important to know what you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your place of business.

Individuals affected with a mild strain typically only need treatment for symptoms. However, some illnesses caused by EV-A71, EV-D68, and Norovirus (GII) can be severe enough to require hospitalization.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has been monitoring this situation closely since the Spring of this year.

While investigating the outbreaks, the CDC has issued alerts to health care providers on how to test for the viruses and enhance child protection, as children and the elderly are more susceptible.

Here are a few of the symptoms when it comes to enteroviruses:

  • Complications of acute flaccid myelitis.

  • Severe symptoms such as sudden weakness in arms and legs, trouble breathing, unsteady walking, severe headache, stiff neck or seizures.

  • Dizziness, wobbliness, or abnormal, jerking movements that are worse at night.

  •  Fever along with any other concerning symptoms.

  • Parents and/or guardians should contact a health care provider if they or their children have any of these listed symptoms.

To help protect yourself from enteroviruses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. (Dial Soap is amazing)

  •  Be especially careful to wash your hands after using the bathroom and/or changing diapers.

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick, and do not share cups or eat after someone.

  • Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth especially if you have not washed your hands.

  • Stay home when you’re sick and keep your child home from school or daycare for 24 hours after fever ends.

  • Pay attention to drooling or if they have mouth sores.

The EPA has specific protocols to treat for various enteroviruses. If you suspect any contaminants are present in your home or business, it is vital to have it professionally disinfected with specialty products and application equipment.

According to the CDC website, Colorado has had previous outbreaks of less-common enteroviruses.

In 2014, enterovirus D68 caused an outbreak of respiratory illness in Colorado children and was associated with 11 cases of acute flaccid myelitis.

In 2003 and 2005, enterovirus A71 caused outbreaks similar to what Colorado is experiencing now, with eight cases of central nervous system infections occurring in each of those years.

Dishwasher Safe

4/7/2016 (Permalink)

Dishwashers have been making kitchen life a bit easier since it became popularized as a must-have in the 1950's. There are certain risks while rare that could pose a problem for younger children.

Steps to take to minimize the risks:

  • Knives and Forks: Keep little ones safe from sharp points by pointing knives and forks downward in the utensil basket.
  • Detergent: Never fill the soap dispenser until you’re ready to start a load and check your dishwasher for leftover residue after each cycle.
  • Steam and Hot Water: Make sure your dishwasher is securely latched at all times and can’t be opened by curious fingers, particularly at the end of a cycle when burns from steam are most likely to occur.

Clean a Microwave with a Lemon

3/29/2016 (Permalink)

Since microwaves made their debut in the 1980's they have become a kitchen appliance that is used often and at times overused. The more use of the microwave the more dirty they become, from lids flying off of Tupperware and leaving behind liquid explosions of mass destruction to flying food debris that plasters itself on every imaginable surface of the microwave. Although microwaves are fast and efficient they can become disgustingly dirty and a chore clean up.

Here is a simple tip that I came across recently....

You need a cheap and easy way to clean your overused greasy microwave oven? Then the answer to all your prayers is in a simple lemon. The days of struggle with removing grease and splatter are coming to an end. Grab a lemon and you’ll solve this issue fast. First, mix a half squeezed lemon juice with a dish of water, approximately 300ml. Mix it well. Then, place the solution in the oven, and turn to the maximum setting and heat for 5-10 minutes. By doing so, the steam will melt some of the grease on the walls and roof of the microwave. Finally, wipe the freshly lemon-scented oven with a soft dishcloth. Your job is done and your microwave is clean.

Garbage Disposal Cleaning Cubes

Homemade garbage disposal cleaning cubes

Here’s a super simple recipe for homemade garbage disposal cleaning cubes.  You can whip up a batch in five minutes or less and store in your freezer for anytime your garbage disposal needs a little pick-me-up.

White distilled vinegar is cheap, environmentally-friendly, and can be used to kill bacteria, mold, and germs.  It’s also all-natural, non-toxic, and frequently used in the kitchen for cooking.

Lemons are edible, environmentally-friendly fruits that are also natural disinfectants.  Plus they smell freaking great.

Vinegar + lemon = one sweet-smelling cleaning machine.

I’ve been using lemon peels to clean and deodorize my garbage disposal for years, but lemon peels PLUS vinegar?!  GENIUS.

Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!

You are going to love this recipe for homemade garbage disposal cleaning cubes.

I didn’t put much effort into cleaning my garbage disposal before now, but now I find myself looking for excuses to grind some frozen cubes.  (Cooking with onions and garlic?  Welp, better add a couple of cleaning cubes to the garbage disposal too!)

I love that these homemade garbage disposal cleaning cubes are frozen because they force the garbage disposal blades to slice and dice and get covered in vinegar.  Seems much more effective than simply pouring liquid vinegar down the drain.  Plus, I just love the smell of lemon coming from my sink.

Here’s how you can quickly whip up a batch of your own.

Homemade Garbage Disposal Cleaning Cubes

Ingredients

  • The peels from 3 lemons
  • 1.5 cups of distilled white vinegar

Directions

  1. Chop peels into small pieces and add to one ice cube tray.
  2. Pour vinegar evenly into the ice cube tray.
  3. Place ice cube tray in freezer, and freeze.
  4. Remove cubes from tray and store in a gallon-sized plastic freezer bag. (You’ll want to do this soon after they’re frozen so your whole freezer doesn’t smell like vinegar.

To Use

  • Add two cubes to garbage disposal.  Turn on water and run disposal until ice is chopped.  (About 30 seconds.)
